They are responsible for raiding The Land Beyond The Wall, scouting and defending The Wall from Mance Rayder, The Others and whatever else might threaten the realms of men. The leader of this class is known as the First Ranger, position held by Benjen Stark during aGoT in which he disappears during a ranging along with his party, not to be found again.
