Lord Lyonel Baratheon, also known as the Laughing Storm, was an anointed knight, Lord of Storm's End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen. He briefly ruled as Storm King, in rebellion to the Iron Throne.

History[]

Tourney at Ashford Meadow[]

When Lyonel was only a knight, he participated in the tourney at Ashford Meadow. He went up against Ser Robert Ashford in the first tilt, which ended up in a draw. However, Ser Robert would admit defeat.

Trial of seven of Ser Duncan the Tall[]

During the Tourney at Ashford Meadow, a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall attacked Prince Aerion Targaryen in defense of Tanselle, a puppeteer from Dorne. Due to this, Aerion and his brother, Prince Daeron, challenged Ser Duncan to a trial of seven. Ser Lyonel volunteered as one of Duncan's champions. Ser Duncan's champions emerged victorious and Duncan was declared innocent.

King Aegon V Targaryen arranged a betrothal of his heir, Prince Duncan Targaryen, to Lyonel Baratheon's daughter. However, the betrothal was broken when he fell in love with and married the lowborn Jenny of Oldstones. Infuriated, and believing that House Targaryen had insulted House Baratheon's honor, he renounced his fealty to the Iron Throne, declared himself Storm King, and pronounced that the Stormlands had seceded from the Seven Kingdoms. He called his banners and took up arms against the Crown.

Lyonel's brief rebellion ended when he was defeated by Ser Duncan the Tall, now a member of the Kingsguard, in a trial by combat. King Lyonel surrendered and abdicated, and swore fealty to the Crown once more. The rebellion was a strategic victory for House Baratheon, however, as Lyonel got what he wanted; King Aegon betrothed his youngest daughter, Princess Rhaelle Targaryen, to Ormund Baratheon, Lyonel's son and heir.
