House Mooton are an ancient and noble house from The Riverlands. Their seat is the castle and town of Maidenpool. Its overlord is House Tully. It is one of the main ports in the Bay of Crabs. The head of the house at the start of the novels was Lord William Mooton.

History[]

The Mootons were petty kings during the time of the First Men. They were conquered by the Storm Kings, but they must have gained their independence because King Florian 'the Brave' Mooton was killed during the Andal Invasion. House Mooton were amongst the houses of the Riverlands that ended up sworn to the Storm Kings and then the Ironborn.

During the War of Conquest a Lord Mooton sided with a Lord of House Darklyn, but both were killed fighting Orys Baratheon. The lands and titles of House Mooton went to Lord Jon Mooton, who fought for King Aegon I Targaryen at the Field of Fire, killing off anyone who escaped the dragons.

House Mooton initially supported Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons, but after Lord Walys Mooton died at the hands of Sunfyre, House Mooton, under his brother Lord Manfryd Mooton, sided with King Aegon II Targaryen. Rhaenyra issued a decree for the execution of members of House Mooton, but she lost her power shortly afterwards. Lord Manfryd Mooton served as the regent of King Aegon III Targaryen until his death in 134AC.

House Mooton followed House Darry against their liege lord, Hoster Tully, during Robert's Rebellion, following House Targaryen. This is possibly because Ser Myles Mooton served as a squire to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, and later went on to be amongst his friends. Myles later went on to be personally killed by Robert Baratheon during the Battle of the Bells.

A Clash of Kings[]

Lord William Mooton didn't attend the war council of King Robb Stark, but still sided with House Tully against House Lannister in the War of the Five Kings. It is noted that William and his sons depart to hunt Nymeria, but were overpowered and they had to retreat. It isn't noted if there were any casualties.

A Storm of Swords[]

Brienne of Tarth, Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Cleos Frey journey past the burnt remains of the town of Maidenpool, but the castle is still held by Lord William. The castle is later taken by the combined forces of House Baratheon, House Lannister and House Tyrell, under the command of Lord Randyll Tarly, who arranges the betrothal of Dickon Tarly and Eleanor Mooton.
