House Hollard is an extinct noble house of the Crownlands. Their sigil was barry red and pink, three golden crowns on a blue chief.
Their lands and triple-towered castle were located close to Duskendale, and they were close allies of the ruling House Darklyn, to whom they held fealty. Circa 270 AL, Ser Symon Hollard was serving the Darklyns as master-of-arms.
House Darklyn believed their taxes were too high and refused to pay. Tywin Lannister as King's Hand was thought by many to be the true ruler of Westerosfrom behind the scenes. A jealous King Aerys thought he could solve this crisis by himself and show everyone that he was still in command. He went personally against advice.
When Lord Denys Darklyn ordered the capture of King Aerys II Targaryen during the Defiance of Duskendale, Symon obeyed and slew Ser Gwayne Gaunt of the Kingsguard to get to the king. Aerys was held for some months and this was the beginning of his erratic behavior. Ever after he suffered from uncontrolable rages. Ser Barristan Selmy killed Ser Symon when he led the sortie that later rescued the king.
After the Defiance was crushed, King Aerys ordered the utter annihilation of both the Darklyns and Hollards. The Hollard castle was pulled down and destroyed, its lord and his family were disinherited and executed. Ser Barristan Selmy took pity on the youngest son, Dontos, and convinced Aerys to spare him.
By thirty years later, during the War of the Five Kings, Dontos had become a knight, albeit not a very good one, but was stripped of his knighthood for appearing before King Joffrey Baratheon drunk and in a state of undress. Joffrey planned to kill him, but Sansa Stark intervened and suggested that Joffrey make him a new court's fool instead. Dontos pledged his loyalty to Sansa for saving his life and helped her escape from King's Landing during the confusion surrounding Joffrey's death. Dontos was in turn murdered by Lord Petyr Baelish to cover Sansa's escape to the Vale, thus ending the line of House Hollard.
