Gaemon Palehair was a pretender king during the Dance of the Dragons. His mother, Essie, claimed he was the bastard son of King Aegon II Targaryen. In the end she confessed to the fact that her son was actually born from a silver haired oarsman from Lys. Gaemon died of poison whilst serving as King Aegon III Targaryen's foodtaster.

During the Moon of the Three Kings Gaemon revealed himself as the bastard of King Aegon, and claimed that he himself should be king. He gathered thousands to his cause after issuing his edicts, most of which were favourable to the poor.
Gaemon was spared after his mother's confession, although she was hanged for treason. He was even taken into the royal household, and would befriend the young King Aegon III Targaryen. He was made the king's whipping boy by Lord Unwin Peake. He was later made foodtaster and would die of poison that may have been intended for the king.
