Lord Jon Connington was the head of House Connington and briefly served as the Hand of the King during the reign of Aerys II Targaryen. Growing up as a squire in King's Landing, he became one of the few close friends of Rhaegar Targaryen. It is implied that he was in love with Rhaegar, as he refers to Rhaegar as his "Silver Prince." This theory is supported by Connington's distaste for Elia Martell, Rhaegar's wife.
Connington is a POV character in A Dance with Dragons.
Appearance and Character[]
As a younger man, Jon Connington was a handsome and energetic man, with red hair and blue eyes. He was a very competent warrior and an aspiring leader, but Tywin Lannister surmised that he was too young and too eager for glory when he became Hand of the King. By the time Tyrion Lannister finally comes across him, Jon is old and hardened, with crow's feet around his pale eyes. His red hair is now grey, but his red roots still show and his beard is still red.
Jon was an extremely ambitious and determined man in his youth, motivated by the desire to prove himself great. He was well liked by most people, including Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, for whom he held unrequited romantic interest. However, Jon was arrogant and overly confident and greedy for approval from his peers. When he fought during the War of the Usurper, his blunders earned him scorn, especially from himself, as he realised he chose glory over practicality and thus failed to triumph on behalf of this king and, more importantly to him, his prince.
Now a disgraced and forgotten exile, Jon Connington is a calculating, determined, dangerous and cautious man who is utterly determined to right his own wrongs and to seat Prince Rhaegar's son on the Iron Throne. He still holds a great deal of pride in his own heritage, desiring to see Griffin's Roost before he dies and judging those around him based on merit rather than blood. He distrusts Harry Strickland and considers him a coward who has never seen true combat. He is extremely distrustful of those around him, and is utterly humourless. Tyrion thinks that Connington has become a wary, dangerous and hard individual, the energetic and eager lord that befriended Prince Rhaegar having been chipped away in exile.
