In A Game of Thrones, when she is married to Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen is given three dragon eggs as a wedding present. One is black, one is green, and one is cream-colored. Dany believes she can feel heat emanating from the eggs, but everyone else thinks that they are petrified and made of stone. At the conclusion of the novel, with the death of her son and Khal Drogo, she burns the witch Mirri Maz Dur alive and puts her eggs in the giant bonfire. Dany then walks into the fire. When she walks out, naked, she has hatched three dragons from the eggs. These dragons, Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon, become her symbolic children and are, she believes, the key to her campaign to take the Iron Throne for her own.
