The Battle of the Whispering wood was an important battle during the War of the Five Kings and was fought between the armies of House Stark, under the command of Robb Stark, and the armies of House Lannister, under the command of Ser Jaime Lannister. It ended with a victory for the Stark forces.

Events[]

Before the Battle[]

Ser Jaime is confident of victory after wins at both the Battle of the Golden Tooth and the Battle of Riverrun. He holds many knights of The Riverlands hostage, as well as the heir of House Tully, Robb's uncle, Ser Edmure Tully.

He regularly leads his troops out now to take, ransack and pillage the castles and towns of nearby riverlords, possibly including Stone Hedge and Raventree Hall. He is unaware that Robb has bolstered his army with men of House Frey and House Mallister, and is marching south on the western side of the Trident.

The Battle[]

Robb lures the overconfident Jaime into a trap in a wooded valley. By utilizing the sorties of Ser Marq Piper to lure Jaime out he pulls the small Lannister force into an ambush. Ser Brynden Tully is assigned with killing off Jaime's outiders, whilst Lord Jason Mallister, Ser Stevron Frey, Lord Rickard Karstark and Lord Greatjon Umber are given command to attack the Lannister forces. Lady Maege Mormont was assigned to alert the other commanders that the attack was ready.

During the battle Jaime would personally attack Robb, but his personal guard would get in the way. He would cut down Daryn Hornwood, Eddard Karstark and Torrhen Karstark before being subdued and taken prisoner. Theon Greyjoy, who fought beside Robb, claimed that the Lannisters lost 10 men for every one Stark man who died.

After the Battle[]

Many Lords and knights of The Westerlands are taken prisoner after the battle. Lord Gawen Westerling is taken prisoner by House Mallister, Lord Quenten Banefort is taken by Lord Jonos Bracken, Ser Garth Greenfield is taken to Raventree Hall, Lord Regenard Estren is taken by House Frey and sent to the Twins, whilst Ser Tytos Brax, Mallor the Dornishman, Willem Lannister, Ser Cleos Frey and Tion Frey are all taken prisoner and held at Riverrun after the Battle of the Camps. Rickard Karstark starts to desire revenge for the death of his sons.
